Geography - East End

A sandstone tenement in Gallowgate.
Glasgow’s East End extends from Glasgow Cross in the City Centre to the boundary with North and South Lanarkshire. It was once a major industrial centre and many original sandstone tenements remain in this district. There are two late 18th century tenements in Gallowgate that both have been well restored. They date from 1771 and 1780.

The Barras.
In East End you will find the famous Glasgow Barrowland Market (known as "The Barras"), Barrowland Ballroom (a major dance hall and concert venue)Glasgow Green and Celtic Park, the home of Celtic FC.

St. Andrew's-in-the-Square Church.
East End is also where St. Andrew's-in-the-Square is located, which is the oldest post-Reformation church in Scotland (built in 1739–1757). Not far from this church is a more modest, former church called St. Andrew's-by-the-Green. The latter was the oldest Episcopal church in Scotland and was the first church after the Reformation to own an organ. (It no longer serves a church though).

Another noticeable attraction in East End is the victorian Glasgow Necropolis Cemetery. It dates back to 1831 and some 50,000 people have been buried at the Necropolis in around 3,500 tombs!

Homes for the Future.
A series of innovative housing developments were built as Homes for the Future as part of a project during the city's year as UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999.

Construction on the 2014
Commonwealth Games
Athletes Village has begun.
A new Scottish National Indoor Sports Arena is planned for Dalmarnock and the area of Dalmarnock will also be the site of the Athletes' Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, located next to the new indoor sports arena.
