Geography - North Glasgow

Empty buildings, Possilpark.
North Glasgow contains some of the city's poorest residential areas. Possilpark is one such area, where levels of unemployment and drug abuse continue to be above the national average. Sighthill is home to Scotland’s largest asylum seeker community.

    Sighthill, buildings and cemetery.
In areas such as Possilpark and Hamiltonhill, for many years, much of the housing has been in a very poor state. However, things look better today as old buildings have been torn down, repair work has been done and new, modern housing estates have been built. Generally, many areas in North Glasgow have gone through a change as they have been revitalized.

The Forth and Clyde Canal.
The Forth and Clyde Canal that passes through North Glasgow were once a vital part of Glasgow’s economy through the heavy industry that took place there. Unfortunately, even many years after, the area was polluted and more or less unused. Efforts, however, have been made to clean up.

Built 1887 in Springburn.
A huge part of the economic life of Glasgow was once located in Springburn where locomotive workshops employed many Glaswegians. Glasgow dominated this type of manufacturing, with 25% of all the world’s locomotives being built in the area at one stage!

Sandstone tenements in Maryhill.
Maryhill consists of well maintained traditional sandstone tenements and is historically a working class area. However, because Maryhill borders with West End, it is relatively wealthy compared to the rest of the North Glasgow.

The Glasgow Warriors.
Maryhill is home to Firhill Stadium (home of Partick Thistle F.C. since 1909) and to the professional Rugby Union team, Glasgow Warriors.
